Have you visited the San Antonio Botanical Garden’s newest exhibition, Frida Kahlo Oasis? This creative experience brings to San Antonio a captivating rendition of the artist’s iconic blue home, Casa Azul, and lush green sanctuary that profoundly influenced her timeless art.

Uniquely curated by the San Antonio Botanical Garden, this exhibition uncovers Kahlo’s deep connection with Mexican native vegetation and the natural world. Frida Kahlo Oasis is making its world debut now through November 2, 2021.

The exhibition’s Casa Azul garden occupies a 2,100 square foot space nestled in the heart of the Botanical Garden, shaded by giant oak trees, and overflowing with Mexican native plants, and a mixture of tropical foliage and desert plants, including elephant ears, bougainvillea, agave, and marigolds. Visitors are invited to explore the famous landmarks of Kahlo’s garden at Casa Azul such as the pyramid that displayed Diego Rivera’s pre-Colombian artifacts collection, the frog-themed fountain, and Kahlo’s desk and easel.

The exhibition also features six monumental animals specially sighted throughout the lush garden grounds – a Dog, Monkey, Deer, Butterfly, Parrot and Hummingbird – which often appear in Kahlo’s artwork.

The Botanical Garden offers a variety of Frida Kahlo and Mexican inspired programs to engage visitors along with the exhibition. Examples include special curated tours, art history lectures, culinary and cocktail workshops and adult and family events.

Considered one of the most iconic 20th century artists in the world, Kahlo (1907-1954) is best known for her uncompromising and brilliantly colored portraits, self-portraits and works inspired by the natural world and the culture and history of Mexico. Originally a student of science, she began to paint from her bed while recovering from a life-changing bus accident. Kahlo’s life and paintings continue to inform and inspire popular culture worldwide.

In honor of the beauty of our city, I’m ranking the Frida Kahlo Exhibit No. 76 in my 300 Reasons to Love San Antonio list. Another great reason to live, work, buy a home and enjoy the specialness of San Antonio.
