This time of year is usually Big Give time in San Antonio – our annual day of online giving to the many wonderful local nonprofits that make our city so special. In light of COVID-19, Big Give now has an emergency relief focus, which allows us to help those organizations that are doing all they can to help us through this difficult time.

The Big Give Emergency Relief website is now open and accepting donations. My favorite cause? ABODE Contemplative Care for the Dying. This small organization cares for folks in their last few months, weeks and days of life – those, like Mary A., pictured above, who can no longer live on their own or have no one to care for them around the clock.

This sweet end-of-life home is located in a lovely residential neighborhood in San Antonio and offers a beautiful, peaceful place for people to live out their last months, weeks and days of life. ABODE is run by Executive Director Mary Thorsby (who happens to be my sister), staff, volunteers and a terrific board of directors. They consider dying a spiritual experience, and they ensure that each of their Guests is able to pass on with respect and dignity.

There is no cost to stay at ABODE – the home operates on our donations and various grants.

ABODE is the only organization of its kind in San Antonio – and one of two in Texas. Follow their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and you’ll see the difference they’re truly making.

In honor of our city’s 300th Anniversary, I’m making the Big Give Emergency Relief campaign my No. 55 Reason in my 300 Reasons to Love San Antonio list. Another great reason to live, work, invest in real estate and appreciate the specialness of San Antonio. I hope you’ll join me in making a donation to ABODE.
