One of my favorite parts of Fiesta San Antonio has to be Chicken on a Stick. Especially when it’s topped off with a jalapeno pepper – and when you want to get extra fancy, you can request a roll on your skewer, too! There are Chicken on a Stick Fiesta medals, of course, and I’ve even seen patches, earrings and Christmas tree ornaments featuring this tasty treat.
That’s why, in honor of our city’s 300th Anniversary, I’m ranking Chicken on a Stick No. 33 in my 300 Reasons to Love San Antonio list.
Nobody knows exactly when Chicken on a Stick became a thing, but we gobble up at least 30,000 to 40,000 of them each year. Most credit J.J. Gonzalez with spreading the love for this Fiesta delicacy. Known as Mr. Chicken, J.J. has been skewering food for almost 30 years. Curious about the proper way to eat one? Here’s the advice he gave News4:
- It is acceptable to take a bite out of the jalapeno or chicken first. Your choice.
- The jalapeno juice can be poured on the chicken but cannot be dipped.
- It is acceptable to dip into other kinds of dips like ranch or hot sauce, but J.J. recommends that you bring your own.
