Did you know that the largest Mexican market in the entire country is right here in San Antonio? Yes, Historic Market Square – or El Mercado – has been a favorite of locals and tourists for generations.

More than 100 locally owned shops in this three-block strip, bounded by Dolorosa, Santa Rosa and West Commerce Streets, display handcrafted art works and all kinds of interesting items that range from paintings and dolls to blankets, jewelry, ponchos, dresses, shoes, musical instruments – just about anything you’d find in Mexico, itself.

And the restaurants are always a treat. Especially San Antonio’s favorites La Margarita and, of course,, Mi Tierra. They’ve been mainstays of El Mercado for as long as I can remember.

In honor of our city’s 300th Anniversary, I’m ranking the El Mercado #62 in my 300 Reasons to Love San Antonio list. Another great reason to live, work, buy a home and enjoy our heritage and culture – and a whole lot of fun – in San Antonio.
