It’s coming! San Antonio’s Fiesta – 11 days of nonstop celebration of our diverse history, culture and spirit kicks off next Thursday, April 18 and entertains us through April 28. Some events have already started!
In honor of our city’s 300th Anniversary, I’m ranking Fiesta No. 31 in my 300 Reasons to Love San Antonio list.
Fiesta San Antonio began in 1891 with The Battle of Flowers Parade to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Today, some 2.5 million party-goers gather here to take part in more than 100 events managed by more than 75,000 volunteers.
From river and street parades, carnivals, concerts and neighborhood fairs and festivals to mariachis, folklórico dancers and the Crowning of Rey Feo, Fiesta San Antonio is a true Texas-sized party. And a historic one, at that. The Fiesta Oyster Bake, for example, celebrates its 103rd Anniversary in this year. This scholarship fundraising music festival features five stages of entertainment and 100,000 oysters sold baked, raw and fried. Proceeds go toward student scholarships to St. Mary’s University.

Well done, San Antonio!
