Having an NBA team in San Antonio is certainly a thrill – especially one like The Spurs. Their five NBA championships are the fifth most in history behind only the Boston Celtics (17), Los Angeles Lakers (16), Chicago Bulls (6) and Golden State Warriors (6). Each championship culminates in more than 100,000 people lining the River Walk for a parade.
The Spurs currently rank first among active franchises for the highest winning percentage in NBA history. With their 50th win in the 2016–17 season, The Spurs extended their record for most consecutive 50-win seasons to 18.
The team’s success coincides with the tenure of current head coach Gregg Popovich, who had been the team’s general manager before becoming coach in 1996. Spurs players have won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player a total of three times, with David Robinson winning the award in 1995 and Tim Duncan winning it in 2002 and 2003.
I was saddened by the recent retirement of my fellow Argentinean Manu Ginobili – did you know I was born in Buenos Aires? Nonetheless, The Spurs are as exciting as ever. Therefore, I’ve ranked our team #15 on my 300 Reasons to Love San Antonio list.
